You know you need more sleep when.....
Okay, so I knew this was coming, but I just wasn't prepared! How do you prepare for sleepless nights? It's not like you can hoard extra hours of sleep and apply them later on. And when you have 4 other kids around, chances of catching up during the day become pretty slim. In the first week or so after Yvetta was born I would tell people that I wasn't sleeping as much as I'd like, "but I can catch up during the day". Well, it doesn't happen. I'm almost afraid to lay down b/c just falling asleep only to be woken up by an arguement, or a request, or a potty is worse than not laying down at all! You know what I mean, don't you? If you're a mom, you've been there! So, life without enough sleep looks a bit like this:
- shopping for groceries and coming home with discount Valentines candy instead (b/c when a newborn starts crying in the grocery cart, all rational thoughts fly out the window and you simply grab what's closest.....and if you happen to be hanging around the discount chocolate, then that's what's closest.......)
- talking to people and staring at them until it becomes uncomfortable for both of you b/c you just can't figure out what they're talking about (I see your lips moving, but......)
- trying to remember to keep your mouth closed (why is it that when you're exhausted, your mouth tends to hang open? - try it - act tired, adopt a vacant stare, let your muscles go slack, think of chocolate - your mouth will open - but maybe it has more to do with the thoughts of chocolate..........)
- singing dittys to the baby about dirty diapers
- answering "ask Daddy" to overwhelming questions such as "what day is it today?"
- chanting "keep Bob dry" a hundred times a day to a 3 yr old in Bob the Builder training pants
- taking an hour to write a few short sentences............
And, most importantly, lots of night hours spent inhaling the sweet fragrance of a soft little fuzzy head and a warm suggly body; of reaching down to a crying little helpless bit of humanity and soothing her back into dreamland; of realizing that these days are numbered and they are precious, even if difficult; of thanking the Lord for putting this new and awesome responsibility into such an irresistable package :)
